De La Hoya and the Dynamo

Oscar de La hoya

With news that Oscar de laHoya and his Golden Boy Promotions are buying a 25% stake in the Houston Dynamo, it seems to me that there would be more talk and coverage of this.  This has the potential to be huge for MLS and for the game in the US for a number of reasons. First off, De la Hoya is a hugely successful athlete both in and out of the ring. He might not be a soccer guy, but he was able to leverage his success as an athlete into that of a businessman, and for soccer players in this country, that is an important example of what can be done. In a league that has had just a handful of owners over the years, the continued influx of new owners with new ideas is incredibly important. The fact that De la Hoya is Latino only makes this even better. In a country with such a large and growing Latino population, capturing this audience and turning them into MLS fans will ensure growth of the league and sport going forward.  I hope that Oscar devotes time, energy and resources to making this a successful situation for the Dynamo and their fans. Hopefully his clout, celebrity and relationships will help Houston get their stadium deal done soon. I believe 100% that this is further evidence of the soccer’s continued growth here in the US  and I think the future is looking.

Anybody have any thoughts on what this will mean to MLS and soccer?
