Don Garber Hits The Blogs

Don Garber

What does it mean when the those in power start to not only embrace the culture of the fans, but begin to participate in it? Blogging has been integral to the growth of soccer here in the US as it has given fans an opportunity to get involved, share their thoughts and become more involved with the sport than ever before. Traditional newspaper outlets and journalists joined the fold and now even MLS head honcho Don Garber is participating. Garber has just launched his own blog and made his first entry here. It’s nice to see that Garber and MLS recognize the importance of the blogosphere, but I can’t help but wonder what took them so long.

You only need to look to someone like Mark Cuban who has been posting on his blog, BlogMaverick, for sometime now. Cuban has redefined how top executives and sports owners can interact with their fans and followers. Giving fans an insight into why he has made certain decisions (trading Nash to Phoenix…he blogged about it) has allowed fans to have a deeper connection to his team and interests, or at least a better understanding of why he does certain things. With Garber deciding to tackle blogging, and hopefully interacting more with fans as one of the results, I can’t help but wonder how this will turn out.

I hope this is a sign of things to come with MLS, and a sign that they have a good idea of what is taking place on the level of the fans. What do you guys think of the commissioners blog?

It’s nice to see MLS jump into the blogosphere but what’s with the blog not having an RSS feed!?
