As Dunny mentioned, I spent this past weekend down in San Diego for the Red Bull Air Race. I have to say that I have been to a lot of events in my life but I have never been to something like this. Putting on events is never an easy task. Things go wrong all the time, especially when you have as many moving parts as Red Bull had this weekend. But from everything I saw and experienced, they put on a flawless show that overtook the entire city. More after the jump…
I headed down on Friday morning by train so I got to do some work and avoid the nasty LA Friday traffic.
Just outside Union Station in downtown…
Arrive San Diego…
Without boring you by going into too much detail, I will give you a quick overview of the weekend. First off, everybody from Red Bull went above and beyond to make sure that we all had an amazing time. Everything was thought through and and we were all treated great. Obviously the main event was the race itself, which I will get to, but on top of the race, there were demonstrations by the Navy, Marines, Coast guard, Red Bull Air Force, a helicopter that does flips (which was definitely Airwolf esque), etc. Putting on an event like this needs to keep a lot of people constantly entertained, and they hit a home run with that!

The race itself was incredible. Seeing airplanes flying that low to the ground, that fast, and having to navigate a course is pretty incredible. Seeing it in person was crazy and something I won’t forget.

In the end, Paul Bonhomme won with Mike Mangold finishing second. The after party and dinner for the weekend Sunday night was off the hook again.
One of the best things about an event like this is the people you get to meet. All the cats from Red Bull were amazing and I appreciate everything. I got to meet and hang with some really cool people outside of Red Bull too (Dennis, Byron, Matt, Tanner, etc). Most importantly, a big shout to my boy Josh Greenberg for setting it all up and looking after me. Good looking out! It was an amazing time and hopefully I’ll be back at another one in the future.
