The EPL Losing its Soul?

Basically it would require that teams in Europe field at least 6 domestic players in their starting line up. The English FA has basically co-signed on this, and many top managers are jumping on board as well. Although the European Union does not like this idea saying that it is illegal based upon the grounds of discrimination.

Former England manager Steve McClaren has gone so far as to say that the EPL is in danger of losing its soul due to the influx of foreign players, managers and now owners. I have to agree with Mclaren on this one. Having home grown players is important to the game, the clubs, the fans and ultimately even the city. It encourages clubs to place a bigger importance on their youth setup and the development of young players and it gives a huge advantage to those clubs that put a lot of time and energy into developing players.
If this rule does get passed, there will be a seismic shift in the game just like there was because of the Bosman Ruling. Will this happen? Who knows…but it is one to keep an eye on in the near future.
