Sven to Mexico

Looks like Sven is already pretty fluent in Spanish. One less worry!

So there has been crazy speculation and chatter that Sven, aka “It”, is going to take over the National Team of Mexico. I have read numerous reports about this, but I haven’t really heard anyone ask why. Why would Mexico reach out to Sven? I can’t imagine Sven has a particularly good understanding of the Mexican game, the culture, style of play, etc. I know Sven can speak a number of different languages, but I’m not sure Spanish is one of them. Also, it must be asked, what has Sven really accomplished lately? I know he won a bevy of trophies when he was manager at Lazio back in the day, but what he hasn’t won much since.

I guess my big question is why do teams consistently take older, more established managers that have a track record, even if that track record is not very good in recent times. What about taking chances with younger, hungrier managers? Porto did that with Jose Mourinho and that seemed to work out. There are a lot of younger managers in the game these days, with fresh approaches and a big hunger for success. If it’s me, that’s the coach I am going to go for. Hire someone like Sven and you know what you are going to get, hire someone young and hungry (like Brasil did with Dunga) and who knows what you are going to get. It might be a bigger risk, but I guess I always like betting on the underdog, especially when that dog is hungry and has something to prove.

By the way, this will never get old.
