Fernando Torres - The $170 Million Man
Filed under: Business, Chelsea, Cristiano Ronaldo, Fernando Torres, WTFI had been hearing little nuggets of rumors about this one the last few days, but now it sounds like it actually might be happening. According to Premiership Latest, Chelsea have launched a bid to bring Fernando Torres to Stamford Bridge and are willing to apy £85million, or roughly $170 million! WTF! $140 million for Cristian, $170 million for Torres…are you serious? The services of one player can’t possibly be worth that. Just the fact that numberes like this are being tossed around blows my mind. I seriously question how the sport can sustain itself when money like thi sis being tossed around.
I love the sport as much as the next guy, and I am personally, professionally and financially tied to the game. It’s success is all of our success and I want to see it continue to grow. But I am a little nervous about its future. When huge money comes into play like this (don’t forget these reported figures are strictly tranfsfer sums…not salaries) it removes 99% of teams around the world that can compete. The biggest clubs already dominate world football, and we already know (at least the majority of the time) who is going to win league titles, cups, major tournaments, etc.
Whether or not these deals go through or not is almost irrelevant at this point. The numbers and astrnomical sums have already been thrown around, so the seal has theoretically been broken. Pandora’s Box continues to creak open, and we all better hope we like what we find inside.
