If you’re a want-away like Gareth Barry is from Aston Villa, how should the home side fans react in your first appearance since the collapse of a proposed move to Liverpool?

They boo. They boo every time you touch the ball. They boo when you shoot. They boo even when you’re substituted. Then they applaud that you’re off the field.

And that’s what happened when England International Gareth Barry lined up for his first start back with Aston Villa as they took on Walsall in a 3-2 pre-season win. Villa’s travelling supporters gave it and gave it hard to the man who publicly stated he wanted a big money and Champions League move to Liverpool.

Now with Barry seemingly staying at Villa (at least for the time being), it’s going to be a long, hard road to win them back. But if there’s a man who could, you’d think it would be Martin O’Neill’s Captain Barry.
