Pia Sundhage might have led the the US women’s team to Gold in the Beijing Olympics, but says she is not interested in going along to meet Bush with other Olympic Gold medallists.

Speaking to Aftonbladet newspaper, Sundhage made it clear that she doesn’t share Bush’ politics and isn’t interested in meeting him. But saying ‘no thank you’ to the White House has not gone unnoticed in the US and Sundhage has been deluged with media requests…

Sorry, but that’s a classless move on her part. He’s the president, you represent the country, swallow your hippy pride for ten minutes and shake his hand.

Just imagine a right leaning coach doing the same to Clinton. They’d be crucified. She’ll be a hero. What a joke.

    Pia, you’re dead to me.

Couldn’t agree more with you Joe. Maybe its that time of month for her?

I completely disagree. Pia is not a US citizen. She wasn’t hired by the federal government; she was hired to coach a soccer team. And yes, I realize it’s about the most high profile women’s coaching position in the world. Her political opinions shouldn’t matter a whit when it comes to her ability to do her job, and frankly I have to respect her more for standing behind her beliefs.

    Awesome! Good job, Pia.

Outside the bubble that we refer to as “America,” the rest of the world is laughing at us.

“Hippy Pride”? Joe, go back to planning bombings of abortion clinics, you mental defect.

Nice BR. Typical liberal who reverts to name calling and personal attacks when they have no logic to back up their viewpoint. Next time make sure you do it CAPS SO I CAN TELL YOU’RE YELLING AT ME.

She’s representing the United States. She is not being asked to agree with or even like the President. However, in her position, you suck it up and act like an adult. If nothing else, be there for your players. She’s acting just like the spoiled little girls she coaches when they lost in 2007.

    Grow up.

Is hair pulling and wedgies next? :)

She is not acting like a spoiled little girl. She is acting like a woman who has very strong opinions. Her political beliefs have nothing to do with her ability to coach the WNT. No one, no matter what job they do, should ever have to sacrifice their beliefs in order to keep their job. That is a load of bullshit right there.

Good for Sundhage! She has done her job and rescued the US Women’s National Team from exactly the sort of nonsensical politically correct issues and attitudes that are berating her now.

Sundhage’s job is coaching, just as Hope Solo’s job is goalkeeping. She’s a talented international professional who has already served the USA much better in her job than Bush has in his. The boo-birds should leave her alone.

Gulati needs to get his woman in line. Makes him look like he can’t control that team (again).
