MLS vs EPL

If a team could play its best XI for the entire season, with no injuries, no international absences, and no congestions issues due to non-league games, how would the top MLS team—take your pick, Columbus, Houston, New England—do in the Premier League?

Greg Lalas asks a couple guys who know both leagues well, Darren Huckerby and Paul Mariner…

Uhhhh….so if an MLS team went to the the EPL, the team would be getting 45 million pounds of TV money to reinforce their team right? So yeah…I think an MLS team with some smart re-inforcements (100 million dollars worth)would do alright. MLS players would basically be the skeleton with some fancy upgrades at key positions.

An MLS team may never play in the EPL season but we can have a valid meaningful game that answers this question. That game will be decided in Japan in a tournament that defines the best club team in the world. No, this is not some intangible scenario I created on my Playstation. I’m talking about the FIFA CLUB WORLD CUP. In order for a top MLS team to get there, that respective team must win the CONCACAF champions league. MLS must play by the same rules and have the same priorities that ALL respect clubs in the world have. If the American League continues to disregard the importance of scheduling season games around major tournaments and international dates a MLS team may never play that important match. The talent is there but until MLS gets it act together we will always rely on bias, drunken, self proclaimed pundits to answer this question for us.
