Alberto Gilardino Handed 2 Match Ban

Alberto Gilardino

In a controversial move, Italian Football authorities handed Fiorentina striker Alberto Gilardino a two match ban for “serious unsporting conduct” after Sunday’s 3 - 1 win over Palermo in which the Italian scored a goal with his right hand that went unseen by the referee during a sliding challenge with a defender.

The Serie A’s top goal scorer with 7 to his name in only 7 matches will now miss Wednesday’s match at home against Inter Milan and Sunday’s match at Siena.

Palermo President Maurizio Zamparini had called for the Fiorentina forward to be issued with a five-game ban, but Zampirini was even more frustrated with the reaction from Gilardino saying, “He even celebrated, incredible.”

It didn’t look intentional, growing up we were always taught to play to the whistle and don’t show that you did something wrong. Gilardino did just that and shouldn’t have been punished for it.

If the ref had seen it, he may have gotten a yellow card and the goal would’ve been disallowed. Banning him for even 1 game is ridiculous
