With Manchester United about to receive a mandatory Fine from the English Football Association after earning 6 yellow cards from referee Howard Webb during the Manchester derby at the Eastlands that saw United’s Wayne Rooney score his 100th Premiership goal and Cristiano Ronaldo sent off for a second yellow after hitting the ball with his hands during a corner, Manchester City head coach Mark Hughes had his say about the rough treatment City winger Shaun Wright – Phillips had to endure.

“If I can be diplomatic and say United have great experience of being able to control the game and dictate the momentum of the play,” said the Welshman this afternoon.

“Sometimes they do that by stopping people in their tracks and Shaun was stopped on numerous occasions.”

Aa for his take on Ronaldo’s red, “I don’t think the referee had any choice,” said Hughes. “I don’t know what reason he will give for doing it but if he says the ball was going to hit him in the face why didn’t he head it?

“It is a soft sending-off but it was a second bookable offense and he had to go.”

“To be honest, I didn’t really think about [the fact it was my 100th goal]. I was more excited about scoring away at City. And for it to turn out to be the winning goal is very pleasing,” Wayne Rooney said.

“City took six points off us last season. The players, the fans and everyone at the club was hurt by that, so to pick up three points against them today was a very good result.”
