Middlesbrough have made their unhappiness with Tottenham public after Spurs supposedly submitted a 6 Million Pound bid for Left winger Stuart Downing.

The England winger, valued at £15m by Boro, is expected to hand in a written transfer request to boss Gareth Southgate, who has failed to persuade the 24-year-old to reject Tottenham’s advances.

Boro chief executive Keith Lamb has accused Spurs of trying to unsettle the Middlesbrough-born player with a £6m bid.

Lamb said: ‘Who do Spurs think they are? They bleated away when Dimitar Berbatov left for Manchester United but they sold at top dollar.

‘Then they want to snatch other players for derisory offers and try to unsettle players. That is what has happened here.

‘Their offer is a joke. Why would we sell our best players to our nearest rivals? Stewart is going nowhere.’

Downing signed a new five-year contract last February, after a similar transfer window of uncertainty.

If Tottenham can persuade Boro to sell, Southgate could turn to Reading midfielder Stephen Hunt, who will cost £4m.Image via DailyMail
