After proving to Sir Alex and the board that he can still bring it when necessary and put teams like Chelsea on blast, Manchester United is set to offer 35 year old Ryan Giggs a new contract.

Giggs’ current contract was due to expire in the summer but he will now play on and Ferguson has even tipped him to pick up the Football of the Year award this season.

“Ryan will be offered a new contract of course. He has been fantastic for us this season – he seems to be getting even better with age,” Ferguson told the Sunday Mirror. “He could win the Footballer of the Year award and it would be fitting if he did after the career he has had.”

Injury ruled the 35-year-old out of yesterday’s FA Cup win over Tottenham Hotspur, but he could return to the first-team in midweek as United travel to West Bromwich Albion.

Giggs already holds the club appearance record, after overtaking Sir Bobby Charlton’s 758 appearances last season, and now looks set to extend that record further.

Despite playing the majority of his career as a left winger, he has been reinvented as a central midfielder this season as he looks to prolong his career and legs.

Yet Ferguson is adamant that Giggs can continue to play on for some time yet. He explained, “He seems to be one of those rare people who find that age and injuries don’t catch up with them.”
