UPDATE – ‘Following further scans and examination, Jermain Defoe will undergo surgery tomorrow after suffering a stress fracture in his right foot,’ read a statement from Spurs.
‘Contrary to newspaper reports that Jermain may have been carrying the injury undetected at the time of his rejoining the Club, the injury, to the fifth metatarsal, was sustained post signing during a training session in the indoor arena.
Jermain is likely to be out for up to ten weeks.’
Reports coming out of England tonight are that recent returnee, Tottenham striker Jermain Defoe has injured his metatarsal during a training ground challenge ahead of Saturday’s game at Bolton.
While some reports are saying this injury is short term, a serious injury might force ol’ Harry’s hand back into the Transfer Market before the Window closes on February 2nd.

The 15.75million pound England striker, who has played only five times since his return to White Hart Lane from Portsmouth earlier this month, will be a heartbroken absentee from the Carling Cup Final against Manchester United at Wembley on March 1.
Defoe, 26, had scored three goals since teaming up again with manager Harry Redknapp, but he is unlikely to play until late March at the earliest after suffering the dramatic setback on Thursday morning.
The injury will force Redknapp, who is desperately trying to lead his team away from a Barclays Premier League relegation struggle, to sign another striker before the transfer window closes on Monday at 5pm.
But the absence of a player whose pace and finishing power had already brought rewards leaves a huge gap in the Tottenham team.
Lyon striker Fred was due for talks earlier this week with Redknapp but the Brazilian’s prospects of a move were shelved because of potential problems over a work permit and his personal terms.
Other options include an attempt to re-sign unsettled Robbie Keane, who Spurs sold to Liverpool for 20m pound last July, or an audacious move for Blackburn’s 20m pound-rated striker Roque Santa Cruz, who is also wanted by Manchester City.
Angry Anfield boss Rafa Benitez has warned Redknapp to stop trying to lure Keane back to London without making an official approach.
He said: ‘We’ve told Spurs we’re not happy with their manager’s comments about Robbie.
