Riley Admitting He Shouldn’t Have Sent Off Lampard?

Miek Riley

After receiving an official appeal from Chelsea following the sending off of Frank Lampard following the midfielders lunging 50 - 50 tackle on Xabi Alonso at the weekend,  reports coming out of England are claiming that Riley might be admitting he was wrong.   If so, Lampard’s mandatory 3 match ban would be wiped clean….

What I want to know is why has it taken 2 days for Riley to admit his guilt, he made a quick decision and the public apology should have been quick too.

i think that regardless of wether your foot finds ball first, and regardless of wether you actually connect studs with shin/ankle/boot, that if you come into a challenge with studs showing and your foot that high off the ground - you deserve to go off. When you’re coming in with studs pointed at above-ankle level, it’s a serious danger no matter the situation.

Watch the challenge again mate, he made no contact with Alonso, eyes only for the ball………. the contact came when Xabi kicked Lumpy.

i agree that lampard didn’t make contact and that contact came when Alonso’s kick came through to Lampards shin. No argument there.

But if Lumpy’s got eyes only for the ball, what’s his boot doing up at almost knee level? No ball up there, mate.

My take away was the importance of the referees angle of view relative to decisions that are made. Riley had a direct view on the challenge. So, what he saw was Lamps with an elevated foot & Alonso tumbling over that elevated foot…straight red. If he had the angle that the camera had, I have no doubt that his decision would have been different.

Ya, that’s an important point, Jim. Steve Cohen was talking about that on Fox Football Fone-In last night. Too bad he kept being cut-off by the babbling moron that is Nick Webster. Only one thing worse than a Eurosnob - a chelsea supporting eurosnob.

Happens week in week out in England, Riley is poor, bad mistake, and his foot wasn’t at knee height if Alonso was kicking him in the calf!
The fact is that lamps won a 50/50 ball cleanly! of course if he had made contact he would deserve to go, but he didn’t.
The fact the FA have over turned the red card says it all, end of arguement. http://www.skysports.com/story/0,19528,11095_4891371,00.html
