Reports coming out of England are claiming the former Arsenal legend and current Portsmouth head coach Tony Adams will be officially sacked on Monday morning following the club dropping within 1 point of the Relegation battle after being FA Cup Champions last season.

Portsmouth will formally announce on Monday that Adams, 42, has paid the price for taking the FA Cup winners to within a point of the relegation zone following Saturday’s 3-2 defeat by Liverpool.

Only last week, Portsmouth executive chairman Peter Storrie denied that Adams was on the verge of being sacked. But it is understood that Adams left following urgent talks between Storrie and owner Alexandre Gaydamak.

Adams, whose only previous managerial experience was at Wycombe Wanderers, was named Portsmouth manager in October following the controversial departure of Harry Redknapp, to Tottenham.

Adams had one game in charge as caretaker, with coach Joe Jordan, before earning a two-year contract on a permanent basis. But Adams’ record is, statistically, the worst in the club’s history with just four wins out of the 22, and only two wins in 16 Premier League games, a run that has seen Portsmouth drop from eighth – when Redknapp left – to 16th.

Under Adams, Portsmouth were also knocked out of the Uefa Cup and the FA Cup, the holders losing grip of the trophy they won in May at home to Championship club Swansea City.
