A professional football league will experiment with using additional assistant referees behind each goal next season.

UEFA president Michel Platini said the latest move by IFAB would ensure the rule changes are part of football by the 2012 European Championship in Poland and Ukraine. For that to happen, IFAB would have to approve the change at its 125th meeting in March 2011.

No decision has been made on which league will be picked to conduct the International Football Association Board’s experiment, but both Italy and France have volunteered to host the trial – although it would likely be done in the second division of those countries – and Major League Soccer also appears to be a contender because of its large crowds and significant television coverage.

But while IFAB pressed ahead with plans to authorize extra manpower to rule on disputed goals, it also agreed to revive investigations into whether technology could provide a better solution – a year after freezing all experiments.

“I am still against a video referee,” Platini said. “If you have an additional referee he can see if the ball is in the goal. You don’t need another system. I am sure it can come in. By 2012 it is logical. This improves the morality of everything.”
