However, an Inter spokesman this morning said: ‘As far as we are concerned nothing happened. The coach was surrounded by several hundred people and Jose was simply making his way back to it so they could go to the airport.
”We are obviously aware of this allegation as it is being reported in the Italian media but as far as we are concerned nothing happened and there is no truth in it at all.’
The Manchester Evening News claims the supporter is from East Anglia and that he was hit because he was singing a football song Mourinho did not like.
A United source said that they believe the incident took place between Mourinho leaving the stadium and boarding the team bus. The man was not injured and did not require any medical treatment.
Greater Manchester Police have contacted United to request CCTV footage of the area and have confirmed a complaint has been made.
‘At 11.55pm on Wednesday March 11 2009 a man reported he had been punched in the face on Sir Matt Busby Way, outside Old Trafford Football Ground,’ said a GMP spokesman. ‘Police are investigating a report of common assault. Inquiries are continuing.’
United would only confirm they are aware of the allegation and are making no further comment.
