Filed under: Friends, IranAfter being passed over twice, Afshin Ghotbi has now been appointed the head coach of the Iraninan National Team.

Twice before it looked like Afshin would become Iran’s head coach, but Ali Daei and Mayeli Kohan both got the job previously. Now Afshin has been given an initial 3 game contract (puase…3 games?)to finish out the qualifying campaign for the 2010 World Cup. With three games left, and three points behind 3rd place Saudi Arabia, Afshin definitely has a difficult task ahead of him.
On a personal note, Afshin was my youth theam coach for years, and he even helped me get my chance to play in Europe. I’ve known Afshin for a long time, and to see the success that he is having is pretty amazing. He’s come along way from those AGSS camps in Pasadena and Burbank, and I’m proud to see him keep pushing himself.

Definitely great to see Afshin finally get his just due.. and just think, a couple years ago he was a Galaxy Assistant… very good dude.
Awesome to see good people get rewarded. Made my day and a few of his former players as well.
Afshin is a great guy. I had the pleasure of meeting him during some coaching clinics I was taking at the HDC. I loved how he incorporated technology into his sessions. Nothing but class. He was with Korea during the 2002 World Cup, so he has experience at the top, I just hope the Iranian FA lets him do his job. Good Luck Afshin!
