Drogba goes apeshit! Where do you come out?
Filed under: Barcelona, Champions League, Chelsea, UEFAChelsea’s Didier Drogba (L) argues with referee Tom Henning Ovrebo after their Champions League second leg semi-final soccer match against Barcelona at Stamford Bridge in London May 6, 2009.
Didier was so incensed that he even dropped an F-Bomber on live TV… See it after the jump
From ESPN:
Guus fully supports his striker Didier Drogba if UEFA decides to punish him over his post-match confrontation with referee Tom Henning Ovrebo and a foul-mouthed TV rant following their Champions League semi-final exit at the hands of Barcelona.
Ovrebo was criticised by both Hiddink and Chelsea captain John Terry after the Norwegian official turned down four penalty appeals by the Blues and Drogba, who had been substituted in the second half, appeared from the tunnel to confront the official after the game.
Where do you come out? Was he wrong? Was he in the right? I just like the fact that he already has his boots off and he is still going hard!
shout out to Paulie Walnuts for the FB post

If Chelsea had scored when Barca was down 10 men do you believe for a second that Pep, Lionel, Inesta and the rest of that bunch would have chased down the ref your nuts. I wouldn’t have been in a spot to blame them. Why should an ounce of respect be given to someone who was as incompetent as Overbo. Drogba took things a bit too far and will likely be dealt with by UEFA. Chelsea are the evil empire of football and will be demonized anytime the opportunity arises. Poor officiating marred a great game of football. It is comical that players are lambasted for yelling at officials, lets take into consideration the magnitude of this game, they have every right to be livid and Overbo has no right to escape the pitch without hearing about it.
Drogba’s repeated embellishments and feigned injuries are a far greater disgrace to the game than the bald Norwegian ref who, really, can hardly be said to have favoured Barcelona given that he put them down to 10 men for a phantom foul. Karma’s a bitch.
Big Fresh, without doubt the best comment ever made on this top notch blog!
Couldn’t agree more.
Couldn’t have happened to a nicer team.
agree completely with Big Fresh. that red card was ridiculous, i’m still not over it.
[…] cameraman caught Didier Drogba’s meltdown brilliance on Danish referee Thomas Henning Ovrebo, which could go down as one of the most classic referee rants ever captured on live television, Ofcom (The independent regulator and competition authority for the UK communications industries) […]
The officiating was horrible in both directions, but I agree with Big Fresh. Barcelona suffered as much if not more due to the lousy ref. At the end of the day you have to play both your opponent and the ref. Chelsea had scoring opportunities that they failed to capitalize. They’re mistake.
I can understand being angry, but Drogba took it too far.
I especially liked Bellettis squib on the 1v1 late in the game…

It’s unfortunate that the game has come to this.
I, for one, tune in or attend a match to watch 22 players go head to head.
Oh and Big Boy. . . do study up on your religious background. Let me know when you find that part of the K word that has anything to do with a westerner sitting behind their keyboard claiming they know anything about Karma. Pu-lease.
“It’s unfortunate that the game has come to this.”
Drew, I have the same lament. Unfortunately, this is true of any sport that involves a referee. There are no perfect referees, but you need an adjudicator. Even in American Football, the video replay does not solve all referees problems.
It’s not perfect, but I don’t see any fix that would make it perfect.
People need to start excepting that it’s part and parcel of the game, it evens itself out during the season, been that way for hundreds of years!

Really, though…who gives a shit?
