Major League Soccer officials announced Philadelphia Union will be the name of the planed expansion team to be located in Chester, Pa.
The city’s historical significance played into the decision about the name and team colors. The team name is a reference to the original thirteen colonies, while the colors of navy blue and gold are a throw back to the uniforms of the American Continental Army. The crest also has roots in American history as the rattlesnake is an allusion to Benjamin Franklin’s political cartoons that appeared in several editions of the Pennsylvania Gazette in the 1750s, with thirteen stars also showing along the bottom as another nod to the original colonies.
