After no other challenger put his name into the hat for the Presidency of Real Madrid, the new and returning “Father of the Galacticos” got down to business a full two weeks early with a reported 260 Million Pound at his spending disposal, already naming a new head coach and bringing Zidane into the fold.

His first move was to appoint Manuel Pellegrini as head coach, with the Chilean coach imminently expected to formalise a deal to replace former Tottenham Hotspur coach Juande Ramos.

And former Los Merengues hero Zinedine Zidane has been installed as the president’s adviser, with former Madrid and Argentina striker Jorge Valdano the club’s new director general.

It had previously been thought that Perez would have to decide between Kaka, Ronaldo or Ribery, but with £260m to spend, he could conceivably afford all three.

However, he chose not to reveal who was on his radar after being sworn in as president today, a little over three years since he quit the post after his initial era of the Galacticos turned sour.

‘We want to return Madrid to the place where they should be,’ he said. ‘It’s an honour and a tremendous responsibility. We know what we are getting into and what is expected of us. We are going to work with all our strength.

‘We must recover as soon as possible the dreams, the stability and the time that have been lost.’
