No team in CONCACAF has won a match at Saprissa Stadium in the past decade, and the US has never won there. The last time we travelled there in October 05 was particularly painful. Heat, turf, flying urine bags…Wednesday night will be big.
“The U.S. team has never won a World Cup qualifier at Saprissa, and no team in CONCACAF has won a match there in the past decade.
‘Our guys have to adjust to the way the ball rolls and bounces on turf,” coach Bob Bradley said. “The turf there is older, but working out on turf here definitely helps. On turf, the ball hops up a lot, so you have to adjust to that. If the turf is dry, the cover of the ball can get almost sticky, which is another thing to adjust to. And your footing is different on turf because it grabs more.”
Defender Oguchi Onyewu agreed.
“Most of us are not used to playing on turf, so it was good to get out there and get a feel for it. You feel the heat a lot more on the turf, and for a guy like me, coming from Europe, that is a big adjustment. The ball rolls differently, so your touch is different. It’s an adjustment we have to make, but that’s part of what being a pro is all about.””
