The USA’s win over England in the 1950 World Cup has been discussed about a billion times, so there’s not much I can add to the conversation. However, I was thinking about the US v El Salvador WCQ this weekend and about the 2010 World Cup which kind of got me thinking about this monumental game almost 6o years ago.
As I mentioned, I don’t have anything to add to what has already been discussed, so I just went searching for some images. I didn’t find as many as I would like, but these represent an important part of our national soccer history. Crazy to think that this was 60 years ago. Add to that I love old, vintage photos, so these are pretty incredible.
Peep the style of the clothes of the dudes in street clothes. Personally, they look like some local Brazilian dudes who are stoked about the upset they just witnessed. I have no idea if that is true at all. But in my mind that is what is going on.
That striped jersey the US team wore in this game still has so much flavor to me. From the front it looks like there’s a pouch on dudes back that holds his arrows for battle.
Almost looks like the keeper already has that look of “oh #@$%. This is not going to end well for me.” Plus, Joe Gaetjens already looks like he is getting his goal celebration on.
Joe Gaetjens has that look that means bizness. I see you Joe!
Here’s to remembering history, and to looking forward.
