Jozy Altidore of the U.S. celebrates scoring a goal against El Salvador during the first half of their World Cup 2010 qualifying soccer match in Sandy, Utah.

It’s a great shot of Altidore high in the air.  Check out the reactions of the fans – I love the expression on the face of the girl with the scarf.   The whole scene is almost like an updated Norman Rockwell painting.

Supporters of Mozambique’s national soccer team react after their World Cup 2010 qualifying soccer match against Kenya in Maputo, September 6, 2009.

Look at his eyes – what is happening here?  A wild and jubuliant scene.  The mask on the friend is pretty scary, but it’s also cool in an Oakland Raiders Darth Vader kind of way.

Saudi fans cheer for their team during the World Cup 2010 qualifying soccer match against Bahrain, in Manama, September 5, 2009.

Traditional attire + spray paint = picture sent around the world.

Argentina’s head coach Diego Maradona watches Brazil’s players during their World Cup 2010 qualifying soccer match in Rosario.

This shot seems to capture all the disappointment but also the diginity and pride of Maradona.

Paraguay’s Salvador Cabanas (2nd L) celebrates with teammates Nelson Haedo, Carlos Bonet (2nd R) and Cristian Riveros (R) after scoring a penalty against Bolivia during their World Cup 2010 qualifying soccer match in Asuncion September 5, 2009.

Amazing shot – at first glance it appears the guy in the middle has been shot by a gun.  I like the look on the face of #18, and I wonder what he’s saying.

Vladimir Voskoboinikov of Estonia celebrates after his team’s goal against Turkey during their World Cup 2010 qualifying soccer match at the Kadir Has Stadium in Kayseri September 5, 2009.

Which way is he facing?  What’s he doing?  It’s a little confusing ,which is why I like this shot.

Swedish soccer fans celebrate their team’s victory against Hungary at their World Cup 2010 qualifying soccer match in Budapest’s Puskas stadium September 5, 2009.

This girl is a genius.  Not only is she fully attired in her national team colors, but she’s thought of everything for her baby – headphones, pacifier, blanket, layers of clothes – that will allow her to enjoy a match at an away stadium in Hungary.  Amazing.  You want to marry a girl who can come up with solutions like this.

Gabonese police in riot gear stand guard in front of Cameroonian soccer fans at a World Cup qualifier soccer match between Gabon and Cameroon, a match which many feared would cause a resurgence of election-related violence, in Libreville, Gabon Saturday, Sept. 5, 2009. Hundreds of soldiers deployed around Gabon’s football stadium for a World Cup qualifier Saturday as the country’s new president arrived and postelection violence continued for a third straight day.

There is a very stern look on the face of this security guard, while there is pandamonium surrounding him.  Can you imagine what this guy would do if one of the fans behind him lobbed an apple at his head?

A street vendor sells masks in the colours of the Argentine soccer jersey outside Rosario Central stadium where fans buy tickets for the upcoming World Cup 2010 qualifying soccer match against Brazil in Rosario, September 4, 2009.

What does Spider-Man have to do with a world cup qualifier?  I don’t know, but I love the creativity and spooky energy.

Mexican headcoach Javier Aguirre leaves the pitch after the end of their World Cup South Africa 2010 qualifier football match against Costa Rica at the Ricardo Saprissa stadium in San Jose, Costa Rica on September 5, 2009. Mexico defected Costa Rica 3-0.

I love this shot.  Coach Aguirre looks completely put-together here.  He is perfect from head to toe – his tie is tied exactly right, his hair freshly cut, his suit expertly tailored.  He is even adjusting his cuff so it looks just the right way.  This is a guy who wants nothing out of place.   He looks like a real detail-oriented kind of person.  They’ve just won a very big match on the road to the World Cup, but Coach Aguirre isn’t celebrating at all.  Despite the win, things might not seem “perfect” to him.  I wonder if he is walking to the locker room and getting ready to rip a few guys a new —hole.

Gianluigi Buffon and Fabio Cannavaro of Italy share a laugh during training at Juventus Center Vinovo on September 7, 2009 in Turin, Italy.

A slightly Kickette style shot here I know, but it’s a good moment and shows that these two Italian stars have known each other a very long time and are pretty effectionate with each other.   I wonder what they are laughing about…or who they are laughing at…?
