“I have the right to own an M.L.S. franchise, which I will action immediately after I have stopped playing.”

“According to a person with knowledge of Beckham’s planning who spoke on condition of anonymity because of concern about jeopardizing a potential deal, Beckham, 34, and his management team at 19 Entertainment (led by Simon Fuller) and Creative Artists Agency (led by Jeff Frasco) are interested in being partners with Joey Saputo, the owner of the Montreal Impact. The Impact plays in the United Soccer Leagues First Division, one tier down from M.L.S.

Other than confirming that he has been approached by a group of potential partners, Saputo declined to speak in anything other than general terms about his long-running efforts to obtain an M.L.S. team in Montreal.

“I can say yes, we were approached about two months ago, but I can’t say by whom,” Saputo said in a telephone interview late last week. “I think Montreal would be a great candidate to be the 19th team in M.L.S. no matter who’s involved.”

The more teams the better honestly.

Way to continue to win us over, Davey. Renege on your initial commitment, then get behind an effort to bring another sub-par Canadian team into the professional league of The United States.

Why does he need to “win us over” Barrak? He doesn’t owe us anything. The guy is out for #1 just like every other professional athlete in the world.

…not just professional athletes, Joe. EVERYBODY is out for #1.
Personally, I’d rather see another U.S. team/city join MLS but if Montreal can have a more successful team than Canadian NBA teams, then more power to them.

I wouldn’t think Becks would be interested in a market like Montreal. I would have thought Miami or possibly taking over Chivas and rebranding would be more to suit his liking.

Because I thought his whole thing was expanding the game in America and had a great love for American patriotism. Maybe he ought to spend $5 and get a map?

MLS needs to stop expanding in Canada until they have a real U.S. league (Not just a couple cities here and there). I would have to drive 14 hours to get to the closest team, but some Canadian (who’s country can’t even support their own league) get’s a team in his back yard. MLS needs to get its priorties straight.
