Park, 28, had been in discussions with the English champions over the summer as his previous contract was due to expire at the end of the 2009-10 season. However, the midfielder is now tied to United until the summer of 2012.

“I am so pleased to have this new contract,” Park told the club’s official website. “I’m really enjoying my time here and I appreciate all that Sir Alex and the staff have done for me, but I have to mention the fans too, as they are incredible.

“We have achieved great success over the last four years and won many trophies. It is a great experience for me to play at this magnificent football club along with other world famous players.”

Park joined United from PSV Eindhoven in the summer of 2005 and has made 86 Premier League appearances for the club, impressing with his work-rate and enthusiasm.

Sir Alex Ferguson described his decision to leave Park out of the squad for the 2008 Champions League final victory over Chelsea as the “hardest” of his career but the South Korean started the 2-0 defeat to Barcelona in May before being replaced by Dimitar Berbatov.

Ferguson said: “We are always pleased to secure the future of our star players and Ji-Sung has proved himself to be a fantastic professional and an important, versatile player in our squad. Therefore, we’re delighted he’s signed a new contract.”
