With Sol Campbell walking out on Notts County after just one match, Roy Keane has stepped up in defense of the 35 year old for having the guts to walk away while also indicating that there still could be a way to sign the player if his contract isn’t “terminated”.

“We’re interested in any player who is available and would be interested in coming to Ipswich,” Keane said. “I’m sure Sol, if he can play, because I don’t know the situation with his contract, will have plenty of options because he is a good player. We’ll see.

“If his contract is terminated then I don’t think he can play for anyone else in January. But we are interested in players who are available and who can come in and strengthen our squad. But that’s a big if. It would be a long-shot, no doubt.”

“I think Sol has had a lot of criticism over the last few days but I admire people who make a decision,” Keane said. “He walked out but trust me there are a lot of players up and down the country sitting on their contracts, picking up their wages. At least Sol was brave enough to say ‘listen it’s not happening’. And that’s got to be admired.

“Obviously you don’t want players breaking their contracts every week but if he’s walking out because he’s not happy then you don’t want a player who is not happy. Whether his contract has been terminated or whether he can go out and play on loan then who knows. But I’m sure there will be plenty of takers for Sol.”
