Sunday’s defeat to Roma was the last straw for the Napoli board and they have moved quickly to axe the former Italy coach and bring in former Sampdoria coach Walter Mazzarri as his replacement.

Napoli currently sit in 15th spot in Serie A and club president Aurellio De Laurentiis keen to transform their fortunes.

A club statement read: “Napoli announce they have released Roberto Donadoni from the role of head coach and appointed in his place Walter Mazzarri.

“The club want to thank Donadoni for the work done in these months and wish him the best of luck for the future.”
