Atletico Madrid’s new coach Quique Sanchez Flores holds a soccer jersey with his name during his presentation at Vicente Calderon stadium in Madrid October 26, 2009. Atletico Madrid have agreed to appoint Flores as coach until the end of the season

Quique Sanchez Flores replaced Abel Resino at the helm on Friday and (even though) he was not officially presented until Monday, he got to work early. The former Valencia and Benfica boss took charge of his first training session as coach of Ateltico Madrid on Sunday morning and spoke to the beleaguered squad at length at the start.

After watching the dismal draw against Real Mallorca on Saturday evening Sanchez Flores spoke to his new players for half-an-hour in a bid to lift their spirits.

While 50 hardcore supporters gathered outside to protest about the way the board has been running the club, inside the Vicente Calderon the new coach was putting his message across.

Defender Antonio Lopez stepped outside after the session and spoke to the throng of fans, who had already made their feelings known after the game the evening before.

With only one win this term in all competitions Atletico’s confidence is rock bottom and Sanchez Flores’ knows that his first task will be to ensure that everyone believes in what they are doing.
