It’s been an incredibly turbulent couple of months for Portsmouth and things won’t be getting easier anytime soon after The Premier League imposed transfer embargo sanctions because of money owed to other clubs.

The sanction means the manager Paul Hart will be unable to bring in new players until further notice as he seeks to save the club from relegation. Pompey currently sit in bottom place with one victory in 10 matches.

The League has acted as Portsmouth, who beat Stoke 4-0 in the Carling Cup last night, still have debts to other English clubs. The embargo will not be lifted until all those monies have been paid.

“We can confirm that there is an Embargo on Portsmouth registering any new players,” said Premier League spokesman Dan Johnson.

“This concerns unpaid money to other clubs and it is in the process of being sorted,” confirmed club spokesman Gary Double. “We are confident the situation will be sorted by the end of the week.”

The transfers involved are believed to be Lassana Diarra’s move from Arsenal in January 2008 and Glen Johnson’s signing from Chelsea in August 2007.

Both players have since left the club, Diarra moving to Real Madrid and Johnson to Liverpool.

It is believed the situation could even be resolved as soon as today.

This is the latest stage in the ongoing financial crisis that has engulfed Portsmouth. Last month the squad did not receive their wages on time and the club have now just gone through a second change of ownership in two months.
