With Carlos Quieroz and Portugal set for their two leg Playoff against Bosnia – Herzegovina and a spot in the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa after struggling through the initial group stage, the battle over injured star Cristiano Ronaldo with Real Madrid could get a lot worse before it gets any better with the Spanish side.

Carlos Queiroz, has called up the Madrid player for the two-legged World Cup qualifying play-off against Bosnia-Herzegovina but the club are adamant the player will not leave the Spanish capital as he continues his recovery from an ankle injury.

A statement issued by Madrid to Spanish sports newspaper Marca last night said: “On Monday we sent the Portuguese federation all the medical evidence, from both our physician and [Dutch specialist] Niek van Dijk, which indicated that Ronaldo is injured.”

Ronaldo consulted Van Dijk on Thursday, with Madrid insisting the player is still at least a fortnight away from a return to action after suffering the injury playing for Madrid against Marseille on 30 September.

Real insist the player will not be joining up with the Portugal squad at their training camp in Obidos and have cited Fifa Article 29 on the Status and Transfer of Players which gives a player the right to be assessed by Portuguese federation medics in the country where his club are based.
