from The Times Online UK:
Fifa may have refused Ireland’s request to replay their World Cup play-off with France after Thierry Henry’s controversial “handball” goal settled the match, but the governing body will discuss the match at an extraordinary general meeting in Cape Town next week.
Sepp Blatter, the Fifa president, has called a meeting of the executive committee in response to the furor surrounding Ireland’s exit, which led for calls for the match to be replayed, for Henry to be punished for deliberately handling the ball and for video technology to be introduced to help officials make correct decisions.
Also on the agenda will be the violence and political tension spurred by Egypt and Algeria’s World Cup play-off matches and the hundreds of arrests across Europe by officers investigating corruption in football. Leading football figures will be in South Africa next weekend for the draw for the World Cup finals, which takes place on December 4 in Cape Town.
Fifa said in a statement: “Due to recent events in the world of football, namely incidents at the play-offs for the 2010 Fifa World Cup South Africa, match control (refereeing) and irregularities in the football betting market, the Fifa president has called an extraordinary meeting of the executive committee.
