We got an email today from one of our readers named Aaron who was asking if we were going to be doing any special coverage on TOW about the big weekend that lies ahead for the Argentine Apertura championship weekend. Aaron was super stoked that his favorite team, Newell’s Old Boys, has a chance of winning the title and wanted to make sure we would cover it all. Although we were going to be touching on it, we clearly couldn’t provide the same passionate and informative coverage that Aaron could, so we decided to hand this one over and let Aaron prep you on the weekend ahead in Argentina. Take it away Aaron…
Banfield will take a two point lead over Newell’s Old Boys into the final round of the Apertura this Sunday in Argentina in what looks to be a very exciting final week.
Banfield, who have never won a title in 113 years of existence look poised to capture their first title after Victor Lopez’s 85th minute header secured a 1-0 home win against lowly Tigre on Wednesday. Meanwhile, Newell’s Old Boys, who sit two points behind Banfield, ensured that title would come down to the final week with a massive 2-0 result against Gimnasia La Plata. The result was captured with a beautiful free kick from another Newell’s great, Mauro Formica in the 16th minute and capped off with a clever goal from the top of the box by Joaquin Boghossian for his 11th goal of the season.
The intriguing final week sees Newell’s host San Lorenzo and Banfield travel to face Boca Juniors to decide the champion. A victory for Banfield will bring a championship and sure riots to Estadio Florencio Sola. A loss for Banfield coupled with a win for Newell’s will see the red and black steal the title on the last day of the season. A Banfield tie coupled with a Newell’s win will result in a tie at the top of teh table. If the table ends with teams tied, a one game championship will be held to determine the champion.
Here’s a who’s who list of players that have been produced from the Newell;s Old Boys system. Among its great players were Gabriel Batistuta, Abel Balbo, Jorge Valdano, Americo Gallego, Mario Zanabria, Gustavo Dezotti, Roberto Sensini, Walter Samuel, Mauricio Pochettino, Rene Pontoni, Diego Maradona, Gerardo Martini, Angel Perucca, Gabriel Heinze, Maxi Rodriguez, Lionel Messi and current MLS player Javier Morales of MLS champion Real Salt Lake.
Thanks for the coverage and breakdown Aaron!
