It was the most talked about incident coming off the 2010 World Cup Qualification phase, with a lot of post match talk targeting  what kind of punishment should be dealt out or if a replay was the right thing to do.  But FIFA has officially let France International Thierry Henry off the hook for any punishment regarding his handball that led up to the goal against Ireland.

But FIFA, fearing the ramifications of banning him for the opening games in South Africa, concluded there was ‘no legal foundation’ for retrospective action.

FIFA did agree to consider further action against Henry but the statement said: ‘There was no legal foundation for the committee to consider the case because handling the ball cannot be regarded as a serious infringement of the FIFA disciplinary code.

‘There is no other legal text that would allow the committee to impose sanctions for any incidents missed by match officials.’
