Wembley Pitch To Be Replaced For The 11th Time?

Reports out of England are suggesting that the decision makers behind the 800 Million Pound Wembley Stadium are thinking about replacing the pitch for the 11th time in just two years following this past weekends FA Cup Semifinal after multiple International players spoke out about the condition of the field.

Following the weekend’s FA Cup semi-finals, Chelsea and Aston Villa players were just as angry as Spurs striker Crouch about a pitch which is rock hard underneath a slippery surface and cuts up quickly.

Crouch said: ‘Everyone was slipping all over the place. There’s no getting away from it, nobody could stand up.’

Saracens play Harlequins in a Guinness Premiership rugby match at Wembley on Saturday, leaving little time to decide if a new pitch is needed for the FA Trophy final between Barrow and Stevenage on May 8.

Then come seven more games, including the FA Cup final between Chelsea and Portsmouth on May 15 and England manager Fabio Capello’s final home friendly against Mexico on Monday, May 24.

Last night former Millennium Stadium groundsman and pitch expert Dave Saltman warned: ‘They need to rip it up so it is softer underneath and drains better, but it will take five or six weeks to bed in.’

Geoff Webb, chief executive of the Institute of Groundsmanship, called for an independent inquiry, saying: ‘At Premier League stadiums, surfaces are not replaced regularly, they are managed and maintained year round to a very high level.’
