In a deal that continues to show that the Portland Timbers are making serious moves before playing in their first MLS game, the Timbers have cut a deal with Alaska Airlines to be their jersey sponsor. The deal could be worth up to $3 million per season. According to Merritt Paulson:

Merritt Pauslon, Timbers president, said, “Today’s announcement is a significant and defining moment for the MLS Timbers. Alaska Airlines as a jersey partner is a perfect marriage for us. Alaska has strong local roots, shares our unwavering commitment to outstanding customer service and offers unique promotional opportunities for our organization.”

This is a significant move for a club that has yet to play a game in MLS. It also speaks to the strength of the sport and the league. Up until recently jersey sponsors were not happening in MLS, especially for a new franchise that had yet to play a game. This speaks to the strength and positioning of the sport, the league and most certainly the Portland Timbers. Congratulations Portland!
