Former Manchester United legend and French footballer, Eric Cantona, would like to be the president of France. To get started, he who would need the backing of 500 elected officials by the end of February to run. To get these signatures, he has sent a letter to French mayors describing himself as an “engaged citizen” and asking for their support. The letter was published today by Liberation, a newspaper in France and it went a little something like this:
As you know, beyond professional activities who have leads to a high-level sporting career in the arts, I am a citizen attentive to our time, offer opportunity to young people – too limited – the injustices it generates – too many, too violent, too systematic. I am a concerned citizen. This commitment imposed upon me to speak today, more seriously than usual, but also with a strong sense of my responsibility at a time when our country is at the front difficult choices and determining its future.
That commitment makes me turn to you because you are in the function that you occupy, a player pre-daily weighing of your citizens, our fellow citizens, you are a powerful link of confidence in the politicians, the future of our institutions, and the link office that you are helping to weave every day, month after month, year after year. If I turn to you, Madam Mayor, is to require your signature in the debate policy in which the country agrees. It is a mark of confidence I expect from you, an act that will ensure your concerns to be fairly represented in this debate. My goal, you will understand, is to collect at least 500 signatures …
**Shouts out to google language tools, because the 2 years of French that I took in high school wasnt cutting it. I had no shot at translating the letter. Full text of the letter is available read at the Liberation link above.
