~~ It’s amazing how much the ‘digital’ landscape has changed over the last couple years… While the game continues to change on the field before our eyes on a daily basis, the same is happening on our side with different perspectives bringing more and more awareness to the game in the United States. Congrats to Women United FC on the jolt they’ve given to game.
When Kristi Colvin curled up on her living room couch to watch Sporting Kansas City’s 2011 season opener, her expectations were low and her sense of obligation was high. Colvin, the chief executive of the Kansas City, Mo.-based creative services agency Fresh ID, had done some promotional work with the team but had never seen a Major League Soccer match before and did not know what to expect.
“I was unsure if I’d be bored, or clueless, or both,” Colvin said. “To my surprise, I was fascinated. C. J. Sapong scored the first goal of the season in the second minute or so, beating an M.L.S. record for fastest debut goal for a rookie.
“I was so inspired by the team from that second on,” she continued. “I was officially hooked.”
Less than a year later, Colvin parlayed her burgeoning passion for soccer into a fledgling business, Women United F.C., an online soccer community for women that launched March 13. The site is committed to two central goals: building M.L.S.’s female fan base and providing women with a safe haven to discuss soccer on their terms.
