Listen to this :: Manti Te’o’s Interview on The Jim Rome Radio Show | @MTeo_5 via @JimRome

“What makes you a man is what you do when that storm comes.”

Before you start with the emails and the comments and the twitter blasts, I get it… Jim Rome IS NOT our guy. He is an unabashed soccer hater and he talks mad junk about the game, even though one of his sons loves playing…. but this post isnt about that.

Its about Manti Te’o. If you don’t know about this linebacker who plays for Notre Dame, do yourself a favor and google him or hit the jump to watch a story on ESPN. He had one of the most ridiculously tragic days that anyone could ever have.

Just trust me on this, listen to the interview, because it puts a lot of things in perspective. This post isnt about religion. This post isnt about politics. This post isnt about Jim Rome. This post isnt even about soccer. Its about the human spirit and doing your best to overcome tragedy and working every day to be a better person regardless of what you face in life.

* Click on the player right above … The first few questions are all about football and Notre Dame, but about 4 minutes in Manti begins to talk about his adversity.

* Its not like this happened to him 4 years ago and he has had time to reflect and put it all in perspective (not that anyone EVER could put this in perspective) but this happened like a month ago. This guy is something else.

After the jump watch a piece that ESPN did on Manti as well…..

Apparently the whole ‘girlfriend thing’ was not quite what we were led to believe. A well done exposé done by “Deadspin : Manti Te’o’s Dead Girlfriend, The Most Heartbreaking And Inspirational Story Of The College Football Season, Is A Hoax” .. has blown the top off of this story. Turns out there is no such girlfriend. Manti has issued a statement via Notre Dame, that reads as follows:

“This is incredibly embarrassing to talk about, but over an extended period of time, I developed an emotional relationship with a woman I met online. We maintained what I thought to be an authentic relationship by communicating frequently online and on the phone, and I grew to care deeply about her.

“To realize that I was the victim of what was apparently someone’s sick joke and constant lies was, and is, painful and humiliating.

“It further pains me that the grief I felt and the sympathies expressed to me at the time of my grandmother’s death in September were in any way deepened by what I believed to be another significant loss in my life.

“I am enormously grateful for the support of my family, friends and Notre Dame fans throughout this year. To think that I shared with them my happiness about my relationship and details that I thought to be true about her just makes me sick. I hope that people can understand how trying and confusing this whole experience has been.

“In retrospect, I obviously should have been much more cautious. If anything good comes of this, I hope it is that others will be far more guarded when they engage with people online than I was.

“Fortunately, I have many wonderful things in my life, and I’m looking forward to putting this painful experience behind me as I focus on preparing for the NFL Draft.”
