Non-league Lincoln City or Mansfield Town will host Liverpool in the FA Cup third round, adding an extra edge to this month’s second-round replay between the pair, who drew 3-3 on Saturday. They will meet at Mansfield’s One Call Stadium on Tuesday 11 December knowing that prestige and a financial windfall await the winners.

Hereford and Cheltenham face each other again to see who plays the other big Merseyside club, a home tie against Everton being the prize for the winner of their replay.

The third-round draw presented several other intriguing matches, as Gianfranco Zola’s experimental Watford team travel to Manchester City while Tottenham Hotspur welcome Coventry City, now in the third tier, to White Hart Lane in a repeat of the 1987 Cup final.

There are four all-Premier League ties, with Arsenal being given a chance to avenge Saturday’s humbling by Swansea City and West Ham hosting Manchester United. Harry Redknapp’s Queen Park Rangers were given no respite from their tough league schedule as they were handed a difficult assignment against West Bromwich Albion while Chelsea will travel to Southampton.

Milton Keynes Dons’ reward for prevailing in the biggest tie of the second round, thanks to a 2-1 victory over AFC Wimbledon, is an away tie against Sheffield Wednesday, a meeting that will have particular significance for MK Dons’ Liverpool-supporting manager, Karl Robinson. “As a Liverpool fan Hillsborough is a fitting place for me to go in the FA Cup,” he said. “I’ll take a minute to myself to pay my respect, as I always do when I go there.”
