* Some people love him. Some people hate him. I am firmly in the love him camp. But TOW is about the people, so we wonder what you think… will Gus Johnson be good for the World Cup?
This is maybe my favorite news about the World Cup since we found out the BP_TOW crew might be getting someone to pay for us to go to Brazil next summer (fingers crossed). It is being reported by SI that Gus Johnson is being groomed to become “the American voice of soccer.” Maybe you have noticed, and maybe you haven’t, but last year he quietly started working some MLS games and the president of Fox Sports is planning on getting him to be that guy by 2018.
* One thing I forgot to mention, in looking at his broadcast schedule, Gus’ first major game for Fox Soccer is on Feb. 13 – Real Madrid v. Manchester United in a Champions League Round of 16 match. That is the first of many huge international games that he will be doing, on-site, so we’ll be able to see whats up.
(Shouts out to OG Winger Corey B for catching me on that one.)
With all due respects to my guy Dunny, more than anyone, we neeeeeed Gus calling World Cup games. I can not wait. If you aren’t familiar with Gus’ work, hit the jump and get a taste.
* I posted some of his memorable basketball clips, but some clever guy did a mash up of a basketball call he did and the Algeria game from the last world cup…. its almost a goosebumps situation.
