Let me start this off by saying that I’m probably late to the party on this one… but I literally just heard about it today and I’m sort of dialed in, so I’m guessing that a lot of people don’t know about this service. It all started when I was writing a ridiculously long facebook update and it struck me… what if Facebook went ahead and bought WordPress so that when I decided to write a crazy long blog post or something and hit submit, it just posted an excerpt to my facebook page. One of my friends commented, “Have you tried IFTTT yet?”
I had no idea what he was talking about, so I did a little I.S.P.S. investigation and found out exactly what it is. Long story short, it works on functions, that they call “triggers”, “actions”, ingredients”, and “recipes” and it works just as the name of the app describes: “IF ____ then _____” .
Simple right? If I take a picture with Instagram, I can set it to post on my Facebook, or go to dropbox, or go to twitter, or go to blogger, or all of the above. Obviously a lot of services have it where you can have a few of the things connected, but IFTTT has pretty much EVERYTHING linked. I haven’t started using it yet, but after watching the video after the jump, I’m sold.*
Check out the tutorial after the jump….
This is genius, right? If you have a fully functioning brand and you hate to have to thumb out a tweet or facebook post after you spent a ton of time writing a blog post, this seems like magic that you can write something and then hit submit and it goes everywhere.
But my questions include, does it work in reverse? If I submit something and it goes everywhere but then I decide I want to delete shit, will it be deleted every where too? or do I have to go in each application one by one and delete them?
What if I make an update to something? Does everything get updated dynamically or do I have to go in one by one and make a correction?
Is there a way to have a long blog post or something for your website, but it shows up as an excerpt in your facebook twitter feed? Is it just a hyperlink on your twitter with no text other than the URL?
I need to find all of this out, but they are one to something here I think. Plus, its still in beta so hopefully they will see this and hook me up with some answers. Or I’ll just have to use it and see. But that could lead to some problems (see below)
* My main reservation is this, and it has nothing to do with the service, its more of a me issue. It seems like this could get reaaalllllly messy reeeeaaaaally fast if you like to have a cocktail from time to time and every once in a while you send out a reckless message or receive a picture via textual messages that SHOULD NOT be shared with the masses. What if I set up a sweet trigger for my personal side, but I submit something and it goes all over my brand?
Anyways, thats my story. Head over to IFTTT.com and see how it works for you. Let me know if you flux with it. I’d love to read about it. Put it in the comments bro. Thanks.
