Let me start off by saying that we rarely if ever get involved in the rumor game here on TOW, but this one is a little bit too juicy to not bring up. Word around the campfire is that there are some rumblings that the chances of Cristiano Ronaldo ending up back with Man United may be better than we think because there are some real heavyweights that would like to see it happen. The whispers are that some ‘people’ from Nike met with some ‘people’ from Manchester United about renegotiating their sponsorship deal, set to expire in 2 years, early. Another whisper is that the official shirt sponsorship deal with GM, that is to start AFTER the 2013/2014 season, may get started early if there is a buyout of the current deal with AON, something that GM reportedly wants to do.
Why is all of this money stuff important? Well, its because of the Financial Fair Play regulations among UEFA clubs. Without some serious cash on hand, and sooner rather than later, there isn’t enough wishful thinking in the world or creative accounting that could get close to how much a C. Ronaldo transfer and salary would cost.
Its no secret that he wants out and isn’t happy about his current situation, so lets just assume that all of this is going to work out the way they want it to. Personally, I’m guessing that even though Man United is arguably the biggest club in the world and that keeps a sponsor happy, I’m sure their two main future sponsors, Nike and GM, would love to have CR in that red shirt. Either way the next couple of weeks are going to be interesting….
