Roberto Martinez Steps Down as Wigan Manager

After winning the FA Cup this year, Wigan manager Roberto Martinez could not keep his side from being relegated. Since these events, and those that saw David Moyes take over at Manchester United, there has been lots of speculation that Martinez would take over at Goodison Park. Not sure if that will in fact happen, but what we do know is that Roberto Martinez asked to be let out of his contract (he had one year left) and Wigan chairman Dave Phelan accepted.  According to Phelan:

“He wanted permission to move so I’ve given that.”

“He has 12 months left on his contract, so whoever comes in for him must pay the remainder of his contract.

“He feels he’s not the man to lead us back into the Premier League. I’ve got to accept what he feels.

“He loves Wigan and the fans. We have to move on now and want applications for the job.”

Hopefully which ever club he ends up at, we’ll still him doing studio work for next year’s World Cup.
