The New York Red Bulls, one of the ten charter clubs of Major League Soccer – having competed in the league since its inception – was a founding member of MLS in 1996, but has gone through several name changes over the years. The club’s original name was Empire Soccer Club, but came into the MLS as the New York/New Jersey MetroStars and competed under that name through 1997.
From the 1998 season through the 2005 season, the team stopped referring to itself as NY/NJ MetroStars, but went by just MetroStars, with no city or state attached to it. On March 9, 2006, Red Bull purchased the MetroStars, and decided to completely re-brand the franchise, changing the name, colors, and logo.
Tab Ramos, the first player to sign with MLS, became the first MetroStar, and Alexi Lalas played 1998 season with the MetroStars. During that first rebranding to just the MetroStars, ESPN got into the act and had the two film a commercial in the “This Is Sportscenter” series.
