The latest FIFA World Rankings contains a pretty big shakeup in the top 20 after seeing some of the results from the last few weeks of international fixtures that resulted in some surprising results.
Spain still tops the list, but has some teams gaining ground after strong showings. Germany is holding tight at number 2, Colombia has moved 4 spots and now moves into third pushing Argentina to fourth.
The Netherlands maintains the fifth ranking in the world, but has Italy hot on their heels as they have leapfrogged Portugal nestling themselves to 6th and making Portugal 7th. Croatia was the odd group out from this movement and are sitting in the 8th spot. The most incredible leap in the top 20, is Brazil, the recently crown Confederations Cup winners, who have gained 13 places since the last rankings – from 22 in the world to now being in the top 10 – placing 9th. Belgium have improved their lot and they are now the final squad in the top 10.
England continues their free fall dropping to 15th. Mexico finds itself ranked 20th. The good guys have moved up six spots to number 22 in the world for the USMNT.
Tons of movement in the top 20 elsewhere…. Uruguay has gained 7 spots and finds themselves 12th. Russia and Ecuador took some L’s and lost 6 and 8 positions respectively to find themselves ranked 17th and 18th. My favorite team that isnt the US, Peru gained 11 spots and are now in the top 20, sitting in the 19th spot.
