The final twitter numbers are in, and again, soccer is king.
For the Super Bowl… the biggest deal in American sports, twitter is reporting that there were 28.4 million tweets worldwide during the game containing terms related to the game and halftime show were sent during the live telecast (from kickoff through 30 minutes after the clock expired) which is INCLUDING the
Missy Elliot Katy Perry halftime show.
When you compare those numbers for the Super Bowl 49 to the 2014 World Cup Final match this past summer, soccer is still king by having over 32.1 million tweets during the Germany v. Argentina final.

* Obviously, these numbers should be taken with a grain of salt when you compare the number of worldwide folks that have access to each sporting event, the number of folks worldwide who have access to social media, and the number of folks worldwide who have a vested interest in either on of the sports….
….but we also have to take into consideration that every single day, hundreds of thousands if not millions of new users sign up for the social media service.
So, that means that the subscriber numbers and the active user base difference from last summer, to this February 1st is, I’m sure, substantial.
This explains why we see new tweets per minute highs with every worldwide event, and it seems, breaking all of the old records.
The Super Bowl can definitely be proud of what its accomplished and as far as American football is concerned, because it shattered all of its previous records BUT if we are going on strictly global numbers, the 2014 World Cup final has the biggest event stateside beat and beat by a pretty big margin percentage wise….. and thats not even doing any twitter population inflation adjusting.
