At the last World Cup, the footballing world hated the ball. For the 2014 tournament, World Cup sponsor adidas had the perfect ball. But we didn’t just want people to like it, or even love it – we wanted them to idolise it. So, it was time to bring adidas’s World Cup hero product to life; for football fans, media, and influencers, everywhere.

Started in 2008, the Shorty Awards are an annual awards event, recognizing the people and organizations producing real-time short form content across Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, YouTube, Instagram, Vine, and the rest of the social Web.

Any organization, including agencies, brands, networks, services, non-profits, etc., can enter their most innovative work on social media, be voted on, and see who wins. The SA’s are more than just about who can buy the most followers has the most followers, but more about who is creating the most innovated and compelling content that has a lasting reach and effect.

If you remember, adidas didn’t just rest on their laurels with an awesome product and tweet out a link a million times, they actually developed a crazy campaign and had some incredible collaborative partners to associate with the launch AND there was awesome content.

They involved one of the most famous men on the planet that moves the culture, Pharrell, they also had content like showing how the ball is made, they did the brazucam, and they even were awarding families who had children birthed on December 3rd, the ball’s launch, with brazuca’s as well.

The recognition is cool. The Shorty Awards are something relatively new, but be aware that they aren’t going anywhere. The Oscars and the Grammy’s and the Emmy’s all started with their first show. If you look at the Shorty’s its crazy that it’s not even 10 years old yet and just started as an awards event for twitter. What it has grown in to today is huge and its only getting bigger. Advertisers have always had an award event that recognizes achievements in commercial work in traditional media, this is something for a newer generation and something that is going to stick around.

I saw an announcement in an article on adWEEK and clicking through, I see that they actually have a huge event that is scheduled for April 20. The big event celebrates all of social media, and not just brands. The are also honoring actors, artists, comedians, etc. Social media is driving the culture these days and it is being honored. It makes a ton of sense.
