This pic is from Marcus Samuelsson’s instagram page. If you know who he is, then you may know a little bit about his history…. if you don’t know his history, let me drop these gems on you. This isn’t a random soccer pic really.
Marcus is hands down one of the best
celebrity chef’s out these days. The born in Ethiopia and raised in Sweden New Yorker, at age 24, became executive chef of Aquavit. Shortly after being named top dog, he messed around and became the youngest chef ever to receive a three-star restaurant review from The New York Times.
In 2003 he was named “Best Chef: New York City” by the James Beard Foundation. He’s got a restaurant in Harlem called Red Rooster that has incredible reviews. He’s won Top Chef Masters. He’s cooked for POTUS’ state dinner. He’s been on every tv show ever. He has a million cookbooks, he’s got cookware, he’s got bakeware ….. it goes on.
The reason why you are seeing his ig pic on these pages, is that in one of Marcus’ books called Yes, Chef, he actually describes himself as a “failed soccer player”.
Many times, in many books and interviews, he has described the game of soccer as his first love, even though he had to quit the game because of his size. His other passion, is cooking.
Check out this We live Soccer profile I just found on the internets:
He’s a massive supporter of Arsenal. He continues to play the game often and he also credits the lessons learned playing the game as a youth for instilling in him, many of the valuable skills that he now has as a chef.
A lot of these lessons and valuable skills learned on the pitch, he has been able to combine and refine and reach out and help kids in his community by being very involved with FC Harlem.
I’m a big fan of this dude and have been for a couple of years now. He seems hella cool and loves the game and he can cook! Big fan.
I had to break out one of the best books I have in my cookbook library and see if there is something that I want to try and make this weekend.
Make sure you check me on the gram this weekend to see what I can come up with…..
* Next time in NYC, the team has to hit up Red Rooster.
